Meet the Team
This project is made possible by the members of our dynamic and dedicated team. Each member is passionate about language and brings with them expertise that help to inform developments in the project and to help engage with the school community to effectively enhance EAL support. Read about each person on the team below, and learn what our favourite words are too!
Project Lead
Gail Forey
I am the Director of Teaching in the Department of Education at the University of Bath. I am currently involved in research related to classroom discourse, disciplinary literacy, pedagogy and the explicit teaching of language for curriculum learning.
Favourite words: 'Trust and respect'
Education Consultant
Stephen Bray
Passionate about education, Stephen has enjoyed a career in the UK as well as overseas and has successfully supported early years settings, primary and secondary schools to raise their standards, develop inclusion and equality practice and in particular to raise the attainment of vulnerable learners including those for whom English is an Additional Language.
Favourite word: 'verisimilitude' - the appearance of being true or real.

Jo Davies
I’m a Research Associate at the University of Bath looking at Further Education. In my personal life I enjoy reading, travel, music and learning other languages. In addition to English, I speak fluent French and conversational Spanish and am keen to learn others!
My favourite word is ‘brouhaha’ because it’s fun to say and can be used in both English and French!

Fadoua Goverts
I am a PhD candidate at the university of Bath, exploring the experiences of home educated teenagers. Before starting my PhD I used to teach in primary, secondary schools and in colleges, in England and in the Netherlands. Alongside my PhD and teaching at the university I home educated my own children. In my spare time I likes baking and decorating cakes and playing with LEGO.
My favourite word is LEGO, which means “play well” in Danish.

Fahima Miah
I am currently a classroom teacher and the lead of EAL, DEI and PHSE. I am interested and invested in; how we can better support bilingual children in the classroom as teachers. The start of my journey as the EAL lead has allowed me to: work with parents, host family events, work with Better Bilingual and work with the amazing people at Bath University. I want to continue to work on celebrating our wonderful languages at Easton and truly be a hub where language is celebrated.
My favourite phrase is: 'Ekṭi bhasha jôtheshṭo nôy' (এই ভাষা যথেষ্ট নয়)
Simply put: “One language is never enough.”

Dan Zhao
I am a passionate PhD candidate in the Department of Education at the University of Bath. My research is centered around the lived experiences of international students in UK universities, social justice issues, epistemic injustice, and the concept of wellbeing. I engage in a variety of hobbies that keep me busy and energetic. Hiking, baking, and climbing are some of my favourite activities.
My favourite word is 'infinity' because the human mind is infinite.

Joy Cranham
I work with colleagues who can help me understand different aspects of life better. I am fascinated by how people learn and relate to their learning experiences differently. My research focus is around how families talk and form understandings.
My favourite word is 'Brilliant!'
Director of Better Bilingual
Catherine Brennan
I’m the Director of Better Bilingual, a small social enterprise based in Bristol. Our mission is to improve academic outcomes in multilingual classrooms through ‘language aware’ teaching, I've worked as an EAL consultant in Bristol for over 20 years; the amazing pupils I've met have taught me words in Somali, Pashto, Turkish and Arabic! I speak some Spanish and French, and want to learn Irish next.
My favourite word is 'halloumi' as it's fun to say and tastes amazing!

Clare Baxter
I'm a Department Coordinator and Instructional Designer at the University of Bath and have a background in teaching English and Media Studies at secondary level. In my spare time I watch a lot of films and help to programme a film festival.
My favourite phrase is: 'carpe diem', a latin phrase meaning 'seize the day'!

I have recently finished my PhD at the University of Bath. My expertise is technology-assisted language learning. I love classic music and literature. I'm also a proud language nerd.
My favourite word is from Portuguese: 'Saudade'. It's a mixed feeling of longing, melancholy, incompleteness, and love.

Jih-Lung Huang
I am currently a MA candidate studying TESOL at the University of Bath. I enjoy linking up with people with different backgrounds and listening to their life stories. I also enjoy listening to podcast while jogging.
My favorite phrase: 'Growing with the flow'. It is a mindset that allows one to embrace challenges and lead to personal growth.
